About Explora Journeys
Is Explora Journeys luxury?
Yes — Explora Journeys is positioned in the luxury cruise tier alongside Silversea, Seabourn, and Regent. Independent reviews from Cruise Critic, U.S. News (No. 2 luxury cruise line for dining 2026), and Tips for Travellers confirm it meets ultra-luxury benchmarks for suite size, staff-to-guest ratio of about one to one, and all-inclusive scope.
#Who owns Explora Journeys?
Explora Journeys is the luxury brand of MSC Group, the Aponte family's shipping and cruise company. It launched in 2023 and operates independently of MSC Cruises, MSC's mainstream contemporary brand.
#How many Explora ships are there?
Two are in service today — Explora I (2023) and Explora II (2024). Four more arrive by 2028: Explora III in summer 2026, Explora IV in 2027, and Explora V and VI by 2028. The fleet tops out at six ships.
#Is Explora the same as MSC Cruises?
No. Both are owned by MSC Group, but they are separate products. MSC Cruises is mainstream, large-ship, family-contemporary. Explora Journeys is all-suite, all-inclusive luxury. They share a parent company and nothing else operationally.
#What is Explora's onboard vibe?
Unhurried, design-led, no formal nights, no assigned dining, no announcements over the PA all day. It is closer to a design hotel at sea than a traditional cruise. The crowd skews affluent and quieter than mainstream cruising; many guests are first-time cruisers from luxury hotels.
#When does Explora III launch?
Explora III launches in summer 2026, with the inaugural sailings in late July and August. It is the first LNG-powered ship in the fleet and adds venues that Explora I and II do not have.
#What's included
Is Explora Journeys all-inclusive?
Yes — Explora Journeys is all-inclusive in scope, covering meals at nine restaurants, unlimited beverages including premium wines and spirits, Wi-Fi, gratuities, the thermal spa, and shoreside shuttles. Shore excursions, airfare, and select chef-hosted experiences are extra.
#Is Wi-Fi included on Explora?
Yes — high-speed Wi-Fi is included ship-wide for every guest on every fare, with no per-day or per-device upcharge.
#Is alcohol included on Explora?
Yes — wine, champagne, premium spirits, beer, and specialty coffees are all included. Ultra-rare vintages and the Anthology Restaurant wine pairing are the only beverage extras.
#Are gratuities included on Explora?
Yes — gratuities are included in the fare. No automatic daily service charge and no expected additional tipping. Extra tipping for exceptional service is welcome but never expected.
#Are shore excursions included on Explora?
No — shore excursions are extra on every fare, booked per excursion. Regent Seven Seas is the only major luxury line that includes excursions in the base fare; on Explora I usually recommend arranging private guides instead.
#Is airfare included on Explora?
No — airfare is not included. Pre- and post-cruise hotel stays are also not included. I handle air and hotel separately as part of packaging the full trip.
#Is the spa included on Explora?
Access to the thermal spa — heated indoor pool, sauna, steam room, ice fountain, sensory showers — is included for every guest. Massages, body treatments, and specialty facials are extra.
#Are specialty restaurants included on Explora?
Eight of nine dining venues are included. The Anthology Restaurant (chef-hosted tasting menus), Chef's Table, Chef's Kitchen, and The Cellar (Explora III and later) carry per-experience charges.
#Is laundry included on Explora?
Laundry and pressing are included for Ocean Penthouse suites and above. Ocean Suite and Ocean Terrace guests get self-service laundromats included with every fare, or pay per item for full-service.
#Are ground transfers included on Explora?
Ground transfers are included for Ocean Residence suites and above, up to 50 miles each way from airport to ship. Lower tiers can add transfers as a paid extra.
#Suites
How many suite categories does Explora have?
Fourteen sub-categories across four tiers: Ocean Suites, Ocean Penthouses, Ocean Residences, and the Owner's Residence. Two are ship-exclusive — the Patricia Urquiola Owner's Residence on Explora III and IV, and the Grand Penthouse with Whirlpool on Explora V and VI.
#Which Explora suite is best for first-time cruisers?
The Ocean Penthouse is the value pick for first-time Explora guests from hotel-luxury backgrounds. At 463 to 743 square feet with a separate living area and butler-equivalent service, it matches a Four Seasons one-bedroom suite at roughly half the per-night fare of an equivalent Aman or Belmond stay.
#What is the difference between Ocean Suite and Ocean Terrace?
Ocean Terrace is the base sub-category within the Ocean Suites tier, at 377 to 420 square feet. Ocean Grand Terrace is the same tier with 11 square meters of usable outdoor space and quieter deck positioning, typically $40 to $80 more per night.
#Ocean Penthouse vs Ocean Residence — which should I pick?
Pick Ocean Penthouse if you want a separate living area in the standard service tier. Pick Ocean Residence if you want a dedicated Residence Host, included airport transfers, free laundry, and dining reservations 120 days out — a different category of trip, not just a bigger room.
#What is the Owner's Residence on Explora?
The Owner's Residence is the single largest suite on each ship, about 3,014 square feet spanning the full aft. It includes a dedicated Residence Manager, up to four ground transfers per Journey, and a private driver ashore. On Explora III and IV it is designed by Patricia Urquiola.
#Which Explora suite has the biggest terrace?
The Cocoon, an Ocean Residence at 1,604 square feet, is the largest non-Owner's suite with a wraparound terrace and private whirlpool. The Owner's Residence has the largest single private outdoor space on board.
#What is the best-value Explora suite?
The Ocean Grand Terrace on decks 6 and 7 is the best value in the entry tier — more usable terrace and a quieter deck for a modest premium. The Deluxe Ocean Penthouse is the best value in the Penthouse tier.
#Do Explora suites have balconies?
Every Explora suite has private outdoor space — Explora calls them terraces. There are no inside or ocean-view-only cabins; the entire ship is all-suite, all-oceanfront.
#Booking and pricing
How much does Explora Journeys cost?
Fares range from roughly $450 per night per person for an Ocean Terrace to $1,700-plus for Ocean Residences and $6,000-plus for the Owner's Residence, double occupancy. Most 7-night sailings price between $5,500 and $12,000 per person all-in for the tiers hotel-luxury buyers usually consider.
#Does booking through an advisor cost more?
No — booking through me costs exactly the same as booking direct with Explora. Commission comes out of Explora's margin, not added to your fare. There is no advisor surcharge.
#What is the deposit to book Explora?
Explora's standard deposit is a percentage of the fare, with the balance due before sailing. Exact deposit and final-payment dates depend on the voyage and how far ahead you book. I confirm the specific schedule for your voyage in the quote.
#How far in advance should I book Explora?
For peak weeks and the in-demand suites — Owner's Residence, the aft Residences, school-holiday Mediterranean — twelve months out is not too early. For shoulder-season voyages, a few months is usually fine. The earlier the booking, the better the early-booking fare typically is.
#Can I hold a suite before committing?
Yes — if we land on the right voyage on a Pre-flight call and you want time to decide, I can usually hold the specific suite for seven days before deposit. No obligation; if you don't book, it returns to inventory.
#Why are Explora prices shown in euros?
Explora's website renders prices in euros even on the US locale for some pages, which makes comparison-shopping harder for US buyers. Every price on this site is in USD, refreshed daily. Live numbers for your specific voyage come back within two hours of an inquiry.
#Is now a good time to book a specific voyage?
It depends on the voyage's booking curve and current promotions. I track price movement across the fleet daily, so I can tell you whether a specific voyage is trending up, flat, or softening — send me the voyage and I'll give you a read.
#Onboard logistics and etiquette
What is the dress code on Explora?
Explora uses a casual-chic dress code with no formal nights. Resort wear and smart-casual throughout; long pants and collared shirts in the main dining venues in the evening; swimwear and cover-ups only at pool areas. No tuxedos, no gowns required, ever.
#What is the tipping policy on Explora?
Gratuities are included in the fare. There is no automatic daily charge and no expected additional tipping for hosts. Additional tipping for exceptional service is welcome but never expected.
#Is Explora good for families and kids?
Explora has the Nautilus Club for children and is more family-capable than many ultra-luxury lines, though it is not a mass-market family product. The Grand Penthouse is the only sub-category with a sofa bed, which suits a parent-with-teenager arrangement. For multi-gen groups, two connected Penthouses usually beats one larger suite.
#How many guests does an Explora ship carry?
Explora I and II carry roughly 900 guests at double occupancy with a crew of about 640 — close to a one-to-one staff-to-guest ratio. That is small-ship luxury scale, not mega-ship.
#What dining venues are on Explora?
Nine culinary experiences: Fil Rouge, the Mediterranean Yacht Club, Marble & Co. Grill, Sakura (Japanese), Emporium Marketplace, the Crema Café, the Lobby Bar and others, plus the chef-hosted Anthology Restaurant. Eight are included; Anthology and a few chef's-table experiences are extra.
#Does Explora have a single-supplement charge for solo travelers?
Solo pricing varies by voyage and suite. Some sailings carry a reduced single supplement on select categories. If you are traveling solo, send me your dates and I'll find the voyages where the solo math works best.
#Working with me
Why book Explora through a travel advisor?
Because it costs the same as direct and you get suite-selection expertise, any onboard credit applicable to your booking, honest cross-line routing, and a real person to call if something goes wrong. The full list is on the Why book through me page — fourteen specific things a direct booker cannot get.
#What happens on a Pre-flight call?
Thirty minutes. By the end you have a named voyage suited to you, a suite tier with a deck recommendation, a USD price range, a one-page PDF brief in your inbox within 24 hours, and a seven-day hold on a suite if it's a fit. No obligation, and I'll tell you if Explora isn't right for your trip.
#Do you only book Explora, or other cruise lines too?
I specialize in Explora but book multi-line. If Silversea Nova, Regent, Seabourn, or Ritz-Carlton Yacht is the better fit for a specific voyage, I'll route you there. The specialization is the focus; the book of business is whatever serves the client.
#Have you sailed Explora yourself?
Not yet — the first FAM trip is being scheduled. Until then, everything I write is grounded in documentary detail (deck plans, suite specs, third-party reviews) and hospitality-operator pattern recognition. I run a fourteen-property luxury rental portfolio, so I read service operations for a living. I won't pretend to first-hand sailing knowledge I don't have.
#How do I reach you?
Book a 30-minute Pre-flight call, send your dates through the inquiry form, or email [email protected] directly. I respond within a few hours during the work day and within a day on weekends.
#What is your cancellation and change process?
Bookings follow the cruise line's own cancellation and change policy, which I walk you through before you commit. As your advisor I handle the paperwork and the cruise-line communication if you need to change or cancel — you deal with me, not a call-center queue.
#Cruise vocabulary for hotel people
What is a tender?
A tender is a small boat that ferries guests from the ship to shore when the ship anchors offshore rather than docking at a pier. Explora tenders guests in at ports without deep-water berths. Suite tier can affect tender priority.
#What is embarkation?
Embarkation is the boarding process on the first day of the voyage — checking in at the terminal, dropping luggage, and boarding the ship. Disembarkation is the reverse on the final day. Higher suite tiers get priority embarkation windows.
#What does double occupancy mean?
Cruise fares are usually quoted per person based on two people sharing the suite — that's double occupancy. A solo traveler pays a single supplement on top of the per-person fare; the supplement varies by voyage and category.
#What is a verandah or terrace?
Both mean private outdoor space attached to your suite. Explora uses 'terrace.' Every Explora suite has one — there are no inside cabins on the ship.
#What is a repositioning voyage?
A repositioning voyage moves a ship between cruising regions — for example, a transatlantic crossing from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean at season's end. These tend to have more sea days, fewer ports, and softer pricing. They suit travelers who want time on the water over a port-packed itinerary.
#What is a Grand Journey?
Explora's term for an extended, multi-region voyage — longer than a standard 7-to-14-night sailing, often a month or more. Grand Journeys carry their own benefits and pricing and suit travelers with the time for a long, slow itinerary.
