"Edge" is my honest read for the typical hotel-luxury buyer, not an absolute. On any specific voyage the answer can flip, which is the entire point of talking it through before you book.
The parts that actually decide it
These two answer different questions
Most people cross-shopping these lines are asking two questions at once and haven't pulled them apart yet. One is about the room and the table: how big is the suite, what's in the glass, how the ship feels at 9pm. The other is about the day ashore: who's running the tour in Kotor, is there a historian telling you what you're looking at, are you learning anything. Explora wins the first question. Viking wins the second.
Explora is all-suite, with a 377-square-foot entry room larger than most of Viking's mid-tier staterooms, and premium spirits and cocktails are included anywhere on the ship at any hour. Viking's fare is lower, includes one guided excursion in every single port, and runs a cultural-enrichment program (resident historians, lectures, regional performances) that's central, not decorative. Neither approach is better in the abstract. They're better for different travelers.
The excursion line is the one most buyers underweight
Explora treats shore excursions as an extra, every port, every time. Viking includes at least one guided tour in each port, usually a walking or coach tour to the marquee site with a local guide. Over a 10-port voyage that's ten tours you're not paying for separately, and it moves the day-to-day math more than the headline fare suggests. If you take the ship's organized tours, Viking's value is real and it compounds.
The flip side: if you'd rather hire a private guide in Sorrento and skip the coach, that included Viking tour is worth less to you, and Explora's unbundled model stops looking like a penalty. I arrange private guiding either way, so the question isn't whether you can get a better day ashore. It's whether you want the included group tour sitting there as the easy default. For a lot of travelers, that default is the convenience they're paying for.
On the drinks, Explora is the more honestly all-inclusive
Viking includes house wine, beer, and soft drinks at lunch and dinner, plus specialty coffees and bottled water around the clock. That covers a lot of people. But premium wines by the glass, cocktails, and top-shelf spirits sit behind the Silver Spirits package, billed per guest per day and, by Viking's rule, bought by both guests in the room for the full sailing. Explora includes the premium pours, the cocktails, and the better wines, anywhere on the ship, with nothing to add on.
So if a negroni before dinner and a good barolo with it are part of how you travel, Explora is the cleaner answer, and you should price the Silver Spirits add-on into any Viking fare before you compare the two. If you mostly drink wine with meals, Viking's included beverages already have you covered and the gap closes.
Kids, calm, and the kind of quiet you want
Both ships are calm, adult-feeling, and casino-free. The difference is enforcement. Viking is strictly 18-and-over, so the quiet is guaranteed; you won't turn a corner into a children's program, because there isn't one. Explora is adult in feel and rarely carries many children, but it doesn't bar them. If a contractually kid-free ship is a hard requirement, that alone settles it for Viking, and I won't try to argue you out of it. It's a real, concrete difference.
Suites: Explora's whole proposition
Explora is all-suite. The entry Ocean Terrace at 377 square feet is larger than Viking's Veranda (270) and Deluxe Veranda (270), and competitive with Viking's Penthouse Veranda (338). At the top the gap is enormous: Explora's Owner's Residence runs 3,014 square feet against Viking's roughly 1,448-square-foot Owner's Suite. If square footage and an all-suite ship are central to what luxury means to you, this is Explora's clearest structural advantage, and it isn't close. If you book a mid-tier Viking veranda and spend your days ashore anyway, the room size matters less and Viking's other inclusions start to win the argument.
