Boca da Valeria is a tiny riverside village of roughly 75 people at the mouth of the Valeria River, about 850 miles up the Amazon near the Pará-Amazonas border. There are no museums, monuments, or organized excursions here, the village itself is the call: stilt houses, a one-room school, a small church, and families who turn out to meet the ship. It is the most stripped-down, human-scale stop on the river, and it rewards curiosity rather than a checklist.

What to do on a day in Boca da Valeria

• Walk the single main path through the village past the stilt houses, the one-room school, and the church, which is the largest building
• Take a 30 to 60 minute small-boat tour with a local boatman up the Valeria River tributary, watching for giant lily pads, fishermen, and riverbank homes
• See the confluence where the smaller Valeria River meets the Amazon, visible from the ship or a boat tour

Getting ashore

The ship anchors mid-river and runs tenders into the village center, with open tendering once boats are stationed. The whole place can be walked in under an hour, so half a morning is plenty, and if you take a river-boat tour leave a comfortable margin before the last tender, which can be early afternoon.

Weather and when to visit

• November to December (Grand Journeys Amazon calls). Typically hot and very humid, highs in the low 30s C with humidity frequently above 80 percent. Late-year calls fall on the cusp of the rising-water season, so expect brief intense downpours and muddy ground underfoot.
