Saint-Pierre was Martinique's cultural capital, the Paris of the Caribbean, until Mont Pelee erupted on May 8, 1902 and a pyroclastic flow killed roughly 30,000 people in minutes. The town that grew back sits among the ruins, a small black-sand harbor of stone shells, a theater skeleton, and a volcano museum, with the volcano itself standing directly over the rooftops. You come here for the volcanology and the eeriness, not for resort polish.
What to do on a day in Saint-Pierre
- Frank A. Perret Museum (Memorial de la Catastrophe de 1902), which holds objects warped by the heat, including the bronze bell of the Saint-Etienne church and the iron grate from Cyparis's cell
- The ruined theater, an 800-seat hall built as a scaled-down copy of the Bordeaux opera house, with surviving stairways and stage walls
- The cell of Ludger Sylbaris (Cyparis), the thick-walled jail dungeon behind the theater that shielded one of the eruption's few survivors
- Rue Monte-au-Ciel, a surviving stretch of the original stepped 1902 street
- The black volcanic-sand beach along the bay, with Mont Pelee rising behind it and known shipwrecks from the eruption offshore
- Habitation Depaz, a rum distillery on Pelee's lower slopes a short drive north, for an AOC rhum agricole tasting
Getting ashore
Saint-Pierre has no cruise pier, so ships anchor in the bay and tender you to a jetty in the lower town, with the ruins, museum, and theater clustered within a flat walk of a few blocks. One day is enough to walk the ruins and the museum on foot, with time left for the distillery or the beach if you add a short transfer.
