Halifax is an Atlantic port city built around one of the world's great natural harbors, with a star-shaped hilltop fort, a long working waterfront, and a sober line in maritime history from the Titanic recovery to the 1917 explosion. The cruise berths sit on a boardwalk that runs the length of downtown, so the city opens up the moment you walk off. It is the classic Canada and New England fall-foliage call.

What to do on a day in Halifax

  • Halifax Waterfront Boardwalk, one of the longest downtown boardwalks anywhere, running roughly 4 km past piers, pubs and shops directly from the cruise berths
  • Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, the star-shaped hilltop fort with the noon gun and kilted guard, about a half-hour uphill walk or a short taxi
  • Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, the gateway through which a million immigrants entered Canada, right beside the cruise pavilions
  • Halifax Public Gardens, a formal Victorian garden of bandstand, ponds and beds, a short walk inland from the waterfront
  • Maritime Museum of the Atlantic on the boardwalk, with the city's Titanic collection and the Halifax Explosion story
  • Peggy's Cove, the much-photographed granite-and-lighthouse fishing village about 45 minutes southwest by tour or car

Getting ashore

Ships dock at Piers 20 to 24, with Piers 20 and 22 putting you straight onto the boardwalk and the Pier 21 museum next door. Almost everything downtown, including the Citadel and Public Gardens, is walkable; one day comfortably covers the city core, and you choose between staying in town or driving out to Peggy's Cove.

Weather and when to visit

  • September (early fall). Typically the mildest of the cruise season, daytime highs often in the upper 60s Fahrenheit with comfortable, sometimes warm days and crisp evenings.
  • October (peak fall foliage). Cooler, with typical highs around the low 50s Fahrenheit and nights in the 40s. Fall color in Nova Scotia usually peaks in the first or second week, with crisp air and a mix of clear and rainy days.
