Qaqortoq is South Greenland's largest town, about 3,000 people in brightly painted houses stacked up steep hills around a small harbor. It earns the day as the most concentrated piece of Norse and Inuit history on the southern coast, with a walkable colonial core and Norse church ruins a short boat ride away. This is a tender port, so your day starts with a short ride from anchor to a dock in the center of town.

What to do on a day in Qaqortoq (Julianehåb)

  • Stone and Man: forty sculptures by Aka Hoegh and Nordic artists carved directly into the rock faces around town, free to find on foot
  • Mindebronden, the fountain on the main square, the only town-square fountain in Greenland and the natural center of the colonial quarter
  • Qaqortoq Museum, set in the town's oldest building, covering both Norse and Inuit history with tupilaks on display
  • Gertrud Rask's church, the town's landmark wooden church above the harbor
  • Hvalsey Church, Greenland's best-preserved Norse ruin, reached by boat roughly 45 minutes each way as the standard excursion
  • The Lake Tasersuaq loop trail for tundra, waterfalls, and views back over the colored rooftops

Getting ashore

Ships anchor in the harbor and tender passengers to a dock in the center of town, a 10 to 15 minute ride, with a tourist booth right at the pier. The colonial core, museum, church, and Stone and Man sculptures are all walkable from there, so one day covers the town comfortably and leaves room for one boat excursion.

Weather and when to visit

  • July to August. The mildest stretch, averaging around 8 to 9 degrees C with highs into the low teens. Cool, changeable, and often wet, with rain a regular feature rather than the exception. Pack waterproof layers regardless of the forecast.
  • September. Cooling and wetter as autumn arrives, with shorter days and a higher chance of grey, raw conditions. Still navigable but noticeably less mild than midsummer.
