Sydney is the harbor town of Cape Breton Island, a former coal and steel city that is now the gateway to Cape Breton's Scottish, Acadian, and Mi'kmaq heritage. The day is honest about itself: the downtown is small and walkable with a few genuine 18th century buildings, but the island's biggest draws (a reconstructed fortress, the Cabot Trail, a Bell museum) sit beyond walking range, so the call is really a launch point for a tour.

What to do on a day in Sydney

• The Big Fiddle (Fèidhle Mòr) on the waterfront, the world's largest fiddle at about 60 feet, right beside the berth and the obvious first photo
• The harborfront boardwalk just to the right of the dock, a roughly 30-minute waterfront walk
• St. Patrick's Church Museum, Cape Breton's oldest Roman Catholic church, about a 5-minute walk from the terminal
• Cossit House (1787) and Jost House, two of downtown's surviving late-1700s buildings, on a short heritage walk
• Charlotte Street, the compact main street about a 10-minute walk for shops, cafes, and craft and artisan stores
• Fortress of Louisbourg, the largest historical reconstruction in North America depicting French colonial life in 1744, a drive away as the headline excursion

Getting ashore

Ships dock right at the downtown waterfront terminal beside the Big Fiddle; turn right onto the Esplanade and it is about a 10-minute walk to Charlotte Street, the main street. One day is enough to see downtown on foot, but the island's marquee sights (Louisbourg, the Cabot Trail and Cape Breton Highlands, Bell's museum at Baddeck under an hour away) require a tour or car, so book ahead if those are the goal.
