La Baie is the cruise gateway to Saguenay, reached by sailing 50-plus nautical miles up the Saguenay Fjord, the only fjord in North America navigable by large cruise ships. The approach between 400 m headlands is the draw as much as the town, which is a small Quebecois community at the head of the Baie des Ha! Ha! The terminal sits in the village, with the fjord's wilderness and a recreated New France trading post within easy reach.

What to do on a day in La Baie (Saguenay)

• The fjord transit itself on the way in and out, with the cliffs and the Notre-Dame-du-Saguenay statue perched on Cap Trinite, best viewed from an open deck in good light
• Musee du Fjord in La Baie, a science museum on the fjord's geology and ecosystem with aquariums of local marine life, a short walk or quick ride from the pier
• Site de la Nouvelle-France, a reconstructed 17th-century settlement with costumed interpreters on the fjord's banks, about 30 minutes from the port
• La Pyramide des Ha! Ha!, the pyramid built from thousands of red road signs in memory of the 1996 flood, a quick photo stop in town
• A small-boat fjord excursion to get under the cliffs at water level, with chances at seals and nesting seabirds
• The artisan market and cafes inside and around the cruise pavilion, strong on local blueberry products

Getting ashore

Ships dock at the Bagotville wharf right in the La Baie sector, a five-minute walk from the village center and its shops and restaurants. Only one ship fits the berth, so a second ship tenders. One day is enough for the town plus one excursion, but the fjord run that bookends the call is most of why you came.

Weather and when to visit

• September (peak fall season). Crisp and pleasant, typical highs in the mid 60s F (around 18 C) with cool mornings and evenings. Early fall color begins to show on the fjord slopes mid-month. Layer up.
• Early to mid October (fall foliage). Cooler, typical highs in the low to mid 50s F (around 12 to 16 C) early in the month, dropping toward the 40s F later. This is the peak window for autumn color along the fjord, roughly late September through mid-October.
