Reykjavik is the compact, walkable capital of Iceland and the gateway to the volcanic landscapes inland. The downtown core packs the Hallgrimskirkja church tower, the Harpa concert hall, the Sun Voyager sculpture, and the Laugavegur shopping street into a loop you can walk in well under an hour. The city itself is low-key and human-scaled; the bigger draws, geysers, waterfalls, and lava fields, are excursions out of town.

What to do on a day in Reykjavik

  • Hallgrimskirkja, the concrete expressionist church whose tower lift gives the widest rooftop view over the colorful city and the bay
  • Harpa, the glass concert and conference hall on the waterfront, a piece of architecture in its own right and free to walk into
  • Sun Voyager (Solfar), the steel ship sculpture on the shoreline path, best with the mountains across the bay behind it
  • Laugavegur, the main shopping and dining street threading through the old center
  • Tjornin, the central pond ringed by colorful houses and the city hall, a quiet few minutes off the shopping streets
  • The Old Harbour area, with whale-watching docks, the maritime museum, and harborside cafes

Getting ashore

Most ships dock at Skarfabakki, the main cruise quay about 4 km east of downtown, where the new Vor terminal opened for the 2026 season; smaller ships sometimes berth at Midbakki in the Old Harbour, which is a walk from the center. Note that the free port shuttle that ran during terminal construction ended after 2025, so from Skarfabakki you now rely on a cruise-line shuttle, a taxi, or public bus 16; once downtown, the city is small enough that one day easily covers the central sights on foot.

Weather and when to visit

  • May to June. Typically cool, daytime highs around 9 to 13 C, with very long daylight approaching the solstice and near-round-the-clock light by late June. Changeable, breezy, with frequent light showers; dress in layers and bring wind protection.
  • July to August. Typically the mildest months, highs around 13 to 15 C and up to roughly 19 to 20 hours of daylight in July. Often drizzle, sun, and wind in the same afternoon; it is too bright for northern lights in high summer.
