Ísafjörður is the de facto capital of Iceland's remote Westfjords, a fishing town of roughly 3,000 wedged on a sandspit beneath steep table mountains at the end of a long fjord. The day works because the dock lands you in a compact 18th and 19th century town you can read on foot, with Iceland's oldest cluster of timber trading houses a short walk away and genuinely big Westfjords landscape just beyond the edge of town.

What to do on a day in Ísafjörður

  • Neðstikaupstaður, the country's oldest cluster of houses dating to the second half of the 1700s, a former trading post at the harbor edge
  • Westfjords Heritage Museum (Byggðasafn Vestfjarða) in Neðstikaupstaður, focused on maritime and fishing heritage and a regular stop for cruise visitors
  • Tjöruhúsið, a seafood restaurant in a 1781 storehouse serving only the day's catch with no fixed menu (reserve by phone a few days ahead)
  • The old town's narrow streets of preserved wooden houses, a few minutes north from the information center
  • Dynjandi waterfall, a 100-meter cascade fanning out like a veil, about 90 minutes south by road and the signature half-day excursion
  • Bolungarvík, the northernmost Westfjords town about nine miles north, with its fishing-station heritage and the Bolafjall mountain overlook

Getting ashore

Larger ships tender and smaller ones dock, but either way you land at the harbor with a marked, flat 2 to 10 minute walk into the town center; no shuttle is needed for town itself. One day covers the town and museum easily on foot, but reaching Dynjandi or Vigur Island puts most of your time in a vehicle or boat, so pick one.

Weather and when to visit

  • June to August (cruise season). Cool and changeable, typical highs around 10 to 13C, long daylight, frequent wind off the fjord and a real chance of rain or low cloud even in midsummer; layers and a waterproof are the norm
