Stornoway is the main town of the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, a Gaelic-speaking island of peat moor, weaving sheds, and a harbor town that feels like the edge of Europe. The day splits two ways: the walkable town with Lews Castle and its museum, or the run out to the Callanish Standing Stones, a 5,000-year-old stone circle that predates Stonehenge. Both are worth the call.

What to do on a day in Stornoway (Isle of Lewis)

  • Callanish Standing Stones, a cruciform circle of Neolithic monoliths older than Stonehenge, free to walk among with no ropes, about 30 to 35 minutes west of town
  • Lews Castle, a Victorian Gothic Revival mansion above the harbor with free entry to the grounds
  • Museum nan Eilean inside Lews Castle, holding six of the original 12th-century Lewis Chessmen found on an island beach, free to enter
  • An Lanntair, the town arts centre with a gallery, cafe, and bar, a short walk from the pier
  • The castle grounds and woodland walks, unusual tree cover for an otherwise treeless island, reachable on foot from the Town Pier

Getting ashore

Large ships now use the Deep Water Terminal at Arnish Point about 3 miles south of town with a 10 to 15 minute shuttle, while smaller vessels tender to the Town Pier, which puts you 30 seconds from the shops and the castle grounds entrance. One day covers either the town or Callanish comfortably, but not both at a relaxed pace.
