Paamiut is a small fishing town of around 1,500 people on Greenland's southwest coast, set at the mouth of the Kuannersooq fjord between mountains and open ocean. It is a tender call to a place few ships visit, where the draw is a compact, colorful colonial town you can walk in an hour and a fjord system that holds Greenland's largest population of white-tailed eagles.

What to do on a day in Paamiut

• Fredens Kirke, the 1909 wooden church in red, yellow, and green Greenlandic colors, the town's landmark
• Paamiut Museum, set in colonial-era buildings including the former governor's residence, with local craft and history

Getting ashore

Ships anchor in the bay and tender ashore; there is no pier berth, no buses, and no taxis. The town is tiny and everything in it is a short walk from the landing, so a couple of hours covers the church, museum, harbor, and lookout. One day is more than enough for the town itself, which is why the fjord and wildlife by boat are what make the call worthwhile.
