Quebec City is the walled heart of French North America, and the only fortified city north of Mexico, set on a bluff above the St. Lawrence. The ship ties up at the foot of the UNESCO-listed Old Town, so you walk straight off the gangway into 400-year-old streets. The compact scale means you can cover both the riverside Lower Town and the ramparts of Upper Town on foot in a single call.

What to do on a day in Quebec City

  • Rue du Petit-Champlain, the pedestrian lane of stone houses and shops directly behind the terminal, often cited as the oldest commercial street in North America
  • Place Royale and the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires church, the square where Samuel de Champlain built his 1608 habitation, a few minutes on foot from the wharf
  • The Funiculaire du Vieux-Quebec, a short cliff railway that lifts you from Lower Town to the Dufferin Terrace if you would rather not climb the stairs
  • Dufferin Terrace, the long boardwalk along the cliff edge beneath the Chateau Frontenac, with views straight down to your ship and across the river
  • The Chateau Frontenac, the green-roofed railway hotel that defines the skyline, about a 15-minute walk or one funicular ride up
  • Musee de la Civilisation in the Old Port, roughly five minutes from the terminal if you want an indoor anchor to the day

Getting ashore

Ships dock at Wharf 21/22 or nearby Terminal 30, both at the edge of the Old Port; from Wharf 21/22 you are steps from the Petit-Champlain district and a 10 to 15 minute walk or one funicular ride from the Upper Town and Chateau Frontenac. One day on foot is enough to see both the Lower and Upper Town comfortably.

Weather and when to visit

  • September (early-season calls). Typically mild days near 18C/64F dropping to around 8C/46F at night; the first fall color usually begins to show late in the month.
  • October (peak foliage calls). Typically cooler, highs near 11C/52F and lows around 2C/36F; fall color usually peaks late September into mid-October, so layers and a wind layer for the Terrace make sense.
