Boston is where you walk the actual ground of the American Revolution, not a recreation of it. The Freedom Trail strings 16 genuine 17th and 18th century sites along a 2.5-mile painted line through a working modern city, and the ship lands you in the Seaport, a short hop from all of it.

What to do on a day in Boston

  • Walk the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile red-brick line linking 16 historic sites including the Massachusetts State House, the Old State House, and the Granary Burying Ground
  • Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, the colonial-era meeting hall called the Cradle of Liberty, with food stalls and the marketplace just outside, roughly the halfway point of the trail
  • The North End, Boston's Italian quarter, for espresso and cannoli at the cafes and bakeries along Hanover Street
  • USS Constitution in Charlestown, the oldest commissioned warship afloat, reached by crossing the Charlestown Bridge or by harbor water taxi
  • Boston Common, America's oldest public park, dating to 1635, at the trail's starting point near the State House

Getting ashore

Ships dock at the Flynn Cruiseport (Black Falcon Terminal) at 1 Black Falcon Avenue in the South Boston Waterfront, about a half mile of walkable but poorly signed streets to the inner Seaport. Downtown and Faneuil Hall are not a comfortable walk, so take the free-to-cheap Silver Line SL2 bus to South Station (5 to 7 minutes), a water taxi to the Faneuil Hall area (8 to 10 minutes), or a taxi (10 to 15 minutes); one full day is enough to walk the core of the Freedom Trail.

Weather and when to visit

  • September (early season). Typically mild, daytime highs in the 50s to 60s Fahrenheit, cooler nights, with rain always possible. Comfortable for long walking days.
  • October to early November (peak season). Typically crisp and cool, daytime highs often in the 40s to 50s Fahrenheit and colder after dark. This is the fall-foliage window for the wider New England and Canada itineraries; bring layers and a rain shell.
