What to do on a day in Amsterdam

Getting ashore

Ships dock at the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam on Piet Heinkade, about a 15 to 20 minute walk or one stop on tram 26 to Centraal Station, from which the entire old center is on foot. One day is enough for a canal cruise plus one museum and a walk through the center, but not enough to see everything, so pick one major museum rather than chasing all three.

Weather and when to visit

• June to August (peak cruise season). Typical highs of 20 to 22C with lows around 10 to 12C, long daylight stretching past 9pm in June, and a real chance of passing showers on any given day. Carry a light waterproof layer.
• April to May and September to October (shoulder calls). Typically milder, 15 to 20C, with thinner crowds. Spring is the drier end of the year, while autumn brings more rain.
