Mandal is Norway's southernmost town, a small Sørlandet harbor of white timber houses on the Mandalselva river known for its long sand beach and its history as an artists' town. • Vigeland House, the boyhood home of sculptor Gustav Vigeland (who created Oslo's Vigeland Park) and his brother Emanuel, among the old wooden houses in the center
• Mandal Church (Mandal kirke), Norway's largest wooden church, consecrated in 1821
• Uranienborg, a short hill walk to a viewpoint over the town and coast
• Lindesnes Lighthouse, Norway's oldest, at the country's southernmost point, about a 45-minute drive as a half-day trip

Getting ashore

Mandal is a tender port; ships anchor offshore and ferry passengers to a landing in or beside the compact town, which is then walkable. One day is plenty for the town, beach, and church on foot; the lighthouse is the only sight that demands a drive.
