Bergen is Norway's gateway to the western fjords, a compact harbor city wrapped around the wooden Hanseatic trading wharf of Bryggen and ringed by seven mountains. Nearly everything that matters sits within a short flat walk of the pier: the UNESCO-listed wharf, a medieval royal fortress, the fish market, and a funicular that lifts you to a mountaintop overlook in eight minutes. One day handles the core easily.

What to do on a day in Bergen

  • Bryggen, the UNESCO-listed row of leaning wooden Hanseatic merchant houses dating to the 14th century, with narrow timber passages running behind the colorful facades
  • Floibanen funicular to Mount Floyen, an 8-minute ride climbing 320 meters to a panorama over the city, harbor, and fjords
  • Bergenhus Fortress and Hakon's Hall, the 13th-century royal seat at the end of the wharf, where the stone banquet hall built by King Hakon Hakonsson between 1247 and 1261 still stands (grounds free to enter)
  • Fish Market (Fisketorget), a few minutes past Bryggen, for fish soup, shrimp, smoked salmon, and ready-to-eat seafood plates
  • KODE art museums, a cluster of four buildings near the city lake holding Munch and Norwegian painting, about 10 minutes on from the fish market

Getting ashore

Larger ships dock at Skolten (Skoltegrunnskaien), a short waterfront walk of about 5 minutes to Bergenhus Fortress and 10 to 15 minutes to Bryggen; smaller vessels sometimes use Jekteviken, closer to the lake side of the center. The whole core is flat and walkable, so one day with the funicular ride built in is enough without booking a transfer.

Weather and when to visit

  • June (early summer). Typically the sunniest and one of the driest months here, mild highs around 16 to 18 C (61 to 64 F) with very long daylight near 19 hours; Bergen is Europe's rainiest city, so pack a shell regardless.
  • July to August (high summer). Typically mild with highs around 16 to 19 C (61 to 66 F), long days, and frequent passing rain; the warmest sea of the year in August.
