Zeebrugge is a working North Sea cargo port, and almost no one comes for Zeebrugge itself. The day is about Bruges, a medieval Flemish trading town 15 to 17 km inland whose canal-laced historic core survived the centuries largely intact and is walkable end to end. You ride in, you spend the day in the old town, you ride back.

What to do on a day in Zeebrugge (Bruges)

• The Markt, the central square, anchored by the Belfry of Bruges, the 83 m medieval bell tower you can climb
• Burg Square, with the Basilica of the Holy Blood and the Gothic facade of the City Hall, a two-minute walk from the Markt
• A 30-minute open-boat canal tour from one of the central jetties, the standard way to read the city from the water
• Rozenhoedkaai, the canal corner below the Belfry that is the most photographed spot in town
• The Begijnhof and the adjacent Minnewater (Lake of Love), a quiet walled courtyard and park at the south edge of the core
• The Church of Our Lady, holding Michelangelo's Madonna and Child, reachable on foot along the Dijver canal

Getting ashore

Ships berth inside the industrial harbor, roughly 2 km from the nearest station and not walkable out of the port, so you take the cruise shuttle, a private transfer, or the tram-plus-train combination via Blankenberge. Transit to Bruges runs about 20 to 25 minutes each way, and one day is genuinely enough because the old town is compact and flat.

Weather and when to visit

• May to June (shoulder). Typical highs in the low 60s F (around 16 to 19 C), mixed sun and passing showers, long daylight. Pack a light rain layer.
• July to August (peak). Warmest of the year, typical highs in the low 70s F (around 22 to 23 C), the wettest summer month for rainfall but mostly short showers between sunny stretches.
• September (shoulder). Cooling but still mild, typical highs around 68 F (20 C), thinner crowds, higher chance of grey damp days.
