Geiranger sits at the dead end of the Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO-listed arm of water hemmed by cliffs with waterfalls falling straight off the rim. The village itself is tiny, a few hundred residents, so the day is really about the fjord walls and the road viewpoints climbing out of it. The sail in past the Seven Sisters is the headline, and it is free from your own deck.

What to do on a day in Geiranger

  • Seven Sisters waterfall, seven streams dropping roughly 800 feet to the fjord across from the village, at their fullest in late spring and early summer and best seen from the ship's rail or a fjord sightseeing boat
  • Flydalsjuvet viewpoint, the classic over-the-shoulder view down onto the fjord and the moored ships, a short bus or e-car ride above town
  • Dalsnibba Skywalk, the highest fjord viewpoint reachable by road in Europe at about 1,500 metres, summer only and reached by tour bus up the Nibbevegen toll road
  • Norwegian Fjord Centre, a 15 to 20 minute walk up from the pier via the Fossevandring waterfall path and its stairs, explaining how people farmed these cliffs
  • Ornesvingen, the Eagle Road's hairpin switchbacks and its viewpoint looking back over the village and the Seven Sisters, on most short bus tours

Getting ashore

Geiranger now uses a motorized floating pier, so you walk straight off and reach the village center in under five minutes rather than tendering. One day covers the village and one or two viewpoints; the marquee sights are on the surrounding mountains, so plan a bus, e-car or boat tour for anything beyond the waterfront.

Weather and when to visit

  • May to June (early season). Typical daytime highs around 50 Fahrenheit, the drier end of the season, with very long daylight near the solstice. Waterfalls run hardest now from snowmelt; high passes like Dalsnibba may still be opening.
  • July to August (peak). Mildest of the year, typical highs in the low 50s Fahrenheit, but also the wetter months with rain on roughly two days in three. Pack layers and a shell even in midsummer.
  • September (late season). Cooling toward the upper 40s Fahrenheit and markedly wetter, the rainiest month of the season, with low cloud that can sit on the viewpoints and hide the high tops.
