Molde is a small fjord city on Norway's northwest coast, rebuilt after wartime destruction, known as the City of Roses and for the Molde Panorama, a line of 222 peaks of the Romsdal Alps across the water. It earns the day for that view and for its position as a gateway to the Atlantic Road and Trollstigen, with a dock that puts you in the center within a few minutes' walk.
What to do on a day in Molde
- Walk the central waterfront and Torget square, about 300 meters from the ship past the landmark clock tower, through a compact rebuilt center with the rose plantings the city is named for
- Hike up to Varden, the panorama viewpoint roughly 6 km uphill by connecting trails, where on a clear day you can count the 222 white peaks of the Romsdal Alps lined up across the fjord
- Visit the Romsdal Museum, an open-air folk museum about 900 meters from the dock, with old farmhouses and town buildings moved here from across the region
- Take an excursion or taxi 52 km north to the Atlantic Ocean Road, an 8.3 km run of low bridges hopping between skerries, named Norway's Construction of the Century
- Use Molde as the launch point for the Trollstigen mountain road and the deeper Romsdal valley if you want dramatic scenery beyond the city, by tour rather than on foot
Getting ashore
Ships dock at Storkaia, right in town, with the center about 300 meters away and the clock tower visible from the deck. The town and museum are walkable; Varden, the Atlantic Road, and Trollstigen need legs, a taxi, or a tour. One day is enough for the city and one bigger outing, not both.
