Trondheim is Norway's third-largest city and its medieval religious capital, founded by Viking king Olav Tryggvason in 997 at the mouth of the Nidelva River. The day centers on Nidaros Cathedral, the northernmost medieval cathedral in the world and Norway's traditional coronation church, with the colorful riverside warehouses of Bryggene and the Bakklandet quarter a short walk on. The whole historic core is flat, compact and reachable on foot from the ship.

What to do on a day in Trondheim

  • Nidaros Cathedral, built over the burial site of St. Olav, a layered Romanesque-to-Gothic church you can also climb in summer for city views
  • The Archbishop's Palace beside the cathedral, among the oldest secular buildings in Scandinavia, with a museum and the crown jewels
  • Gamle Bybro, the red-painted old town bridge, for the classic view of the timber Bryggene warehouses reflected in the Nidelva
  • Bakklandet, the cobbled riverside quarter of restored wooden houses, cafes and the Trampe bicycle lift on the steep hill above
  • Ravnkloa fish market at the harbor end of the main street, a short stop for fresh seafood
  • Kristiansten Fort on the hill east of the river, a short uphill walk for a panorama over the city and fjord

Getting ashore

Ships dock at the Brattøra quay, a roughly 15-minute walk across a pedestrian bridge to the cathedral and historic center, with the harbor terminal close to town. One day is comfortably enough to see the cathedral, the old bridge and Bakklandet on foot, with time for the fort or a museum.

Weather and when to visit

  • June to August (main call season). The warmest and brightest months, with typical highs around 15 to 19°C, very long daylight, and white nights into mid-August when it never fully darkens. Rain is possible but lighter than autumn, so plan for mild, changeable days.
  • May and September (shoulder calls). Cooler, with highs around 10 to 14°C. May is among the drier and sunnier months; September turns markedly wetter and shorter on daylight.
