Brønnøysund is a small coastal town on Norway's Helgeland coast, a compact harbor community whose reason for the call is Torghatten, the nearby mountain pierced clean through by a natural hole. The town itself is a quiet five-minute stroll from the pier, but the day belongs to the hike up to the tunnel and the views over the archipelago. It is a nature-first stop rather than a cultural city, and that is the point.
What to do on a day in Brønnøysund
- Torghatten, the mountain on nearby Torget island with a natural tunnel about 160 meters long and 35 meters high, reached by a short transfer then a stair climb of roughly 20 to 25 minutes
- The view from inside the Torghatten hole, looking back out over the sea and skerries from the tunnel mouth
- Havnegata, the harborfront main street, a short walk from the ship for boats, shops and seafood
- Brønnøy Church, an 1870 neo-Gothic church retaining medieval elements and a pre-Reformation wooden crucifix
- The Vega archipelago offshore, a UNESCO site of thousands of islands and skerries known for centuries of eiderdown harvesting
Getting ashore
Ships dock at Havnegata in the heart of town, with the center less than a five-minute walk from the pier. The town is small, so most of the day is spent on the Torghatten excursion, which combines a short bus or transfer with a steep but well-built stair path; one day is more than enough.

Weather and when to visit
- June to August (main call season). Short, cool and often cloudy summers with typical highs roughly in the mid-teens Celsius, very long daylight, and a real chance of rain on the exposed coast. The Torghatten path can be slippery when wet, so grippy footwear matters.
- May and September (shoulder calls). Cooler and wetter, with shorter days. The Torghatten guided hike typically runs from spring into October, so a shoulder call can still reach the hole.
