Busan is South Korea's second city and busiest port, a coastal sprawl of beaches, mountain temples, seafood markets, and a hillside village painted every color. It rewards a focused day far more than a checklist one, because the headline sights sit at opposite ends of a large city.

What to do on a day in Busan

• Jagalchi Fish Market, Korea's largest seafood market, where you pick a fish downstairs and have it cooked upstairs, near the Nampo shuttle drop
• BIFF Square and Gukje Market, adjacent street-food and bargain-shopping warrens famous for ssiat hotteok, the seeded sweet pancake
• Gamcheon Culture Village, the terraced cluster of pastel houses and murals on a coastal hillside, about a 20 to 30 minute taxi from the port
• Busan Tower at Yongdusan Park, a short walk uphill from Nampo for a panorama over the harbor
• Haeundae Beach, the city's wide signature beach, reachable on Subway Line 2
• Haedong Yonggungsa, the rare seaside Buddhist temple built into the rocks on the coast, about an hour out by road

Getting ashore

Most ships use Busan Port International Passenger Terminal near downtown; the largest dock at Yeongdo cruise terminal. From the main terminal a free shuttle runs to Busan Station in about 25 to 30 minutes, or you can walk roughly 10 to 15 minutes to a subway line. One day realistically covers two or three sights once you account for immigration and cross-city travel, so cluster them.

Weather and when to visit

• April to May. Typically mild and pleasant, highs around the low 60s in April climbing through May, lots of sunshine and relatively few rain days; spring blossoms.
• October to early November. Typically the clearest stretch, highs around 68F in October cooling gradually, very low rainfall and long sunny days, ideal walking weather.
