A cruise call on Tokyo lands you on Odaiba, a reclaimed island in Tokyo Bay that is itself a waterfront entertainment and shopping district, with the Rainbow Bridge and the city skyline directly across the water. From there a raised transit line puts central Tokyo within reach in well under an hour, so a single day can be spent either on Odaiba's bayfront attractions or pushed into the historic and high-energy districts of the city proper. One day only scratches a metropolis this size, so the move is to pick one or two neighborhoods and commit.

What to do on a day in Tokyo

  • Senso-ji temple and the Nakamise shopping street in Asakusa, Tokyo's oldest temple and most atmospheric traditional quarter, reachable by train or by river boat that connects directly from Odaiba
  • The Shibuya scramble crossing and Meiji Jingu shrine, pairing Tokyo's busiest intersection with a forested Shinto shrine a short walk apart
  • Odaiba's own waterfront, including Odaiba Marine Park and the Rainbow Bridge views, all within an 8-minute walk of the terminal for those who prefer to stay close
  • The Imperial Palace East Gardens and the Ginza shopping district, an easy combination near Tokyo Station for gardens, moats, and flagship retail
  • teamLab digital art museums on the bay, immersive light-and-projection installations near the cruise area (book timed entry ahead)

Getting ashore

Ships use the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal on Odaiba in Koto Ward. The nearest station, on the Yurikamome line, is about an 8-minute walk; from there it is roughly 20 minutes to Shimbashi and a few more to Tokyo Station on the JR Yamanote or Keihin-Tohoku line. One day is enough for a focused slice of the city but nothing close to the whole.

Weather and when to visit

  • March to May (spring). Mild and the most comfortable season, with highs typically rising from the upper 50s into the 70s Fahrenheit. Late March into early April carries cherry blossom, paired with the largest crowds of the year.
  • September to November (autumn). Warm and humid in September, with a tail of the typhoon season that can bring heavy rain, easing into clear, comfortable days and cooler temperatures through October and November.
