Nagoya is Japan's industrial heartland on Ise Bay, a working manufacturing city better known for Toyota and Nagoya Castle than for tourism. The cruise day splits cleanly: a self-contained leisure pier with one of Japan's better aquariums right at the dock, or a short subway run to a golden-roofed feudal castle and one of the country's most sacred shrines.

What to do on a day in Nagoya

• Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium at Garden Pier, a five-minute walk from the ship, with beluga and orca tanks and daily dolphin shows
• Nagoya Port Building observation deck and the Maritime Museum, plus the Antarctic icebreaker Fuji moored alongside, all in the pier complex
• Nagoya Castle, the Tokugawa fortress with golden shachihoko tiger-fish roof ornaments and reconstructed Honmaru palace halls, reached by subway via Kanayama
• Atsuta Shrine, one of Shinto's holiest sites and home of the Kusanagi sword, a forested precinct five minutes from Jingu-Nishi Station on the Meijo Line
• Osu shopping district and Osu Kannon temple, a dense covered-arcade quarter mixing the old temple with secondhand and street food stalls
• Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology, the original loom-and-automobile works for anyone drawn to how the city was built

Getting ashore

Ships dock at Garden Pier in the south of the city, five minutes on foot from Nagoyako Station, the terminal of the Meiko subway line. The pier's own attractions are walk-off, but the castle and Atsuta Shrine are a subway ride with a transfer at Kanayama, so one day means choosing between the waterfront cluster and the downtown sights, not both at leisure.
