Miyako is an Okinawan island ringed by white-sand beaches and the clear water locals call Miyako Blue, with no railway and a string of long bridges linking it to smaller outer islands. Getting ashore

Ships berth at Hirara Port's cruise berth and Marine Terminal, roughly a 15-minute walk from Hirara's town center; Miyako Airport is about 10 minutes by car. The island has no trains, so beaches and bridges need a taxi, rental car, or excursion, and one day covers a beach plus a bridge run but not the whole island.

Weather and when to visit

• Spring (April to June). Warm and increasingly humid, daytime around 23 to 25 C early in the window, with the rainy season arriving in earnest in late May. Generally the calmest stretch before typhoon risk.
• Summer (July to September). Hot, with August highs near 28 C and the warmest sea, but this is peak typhoon season for Okinawa, when a passing storm can disrupt a call. July tends to sit between the wettest and the stormiest months.
