Ishigaki is the hub of the Yaeyama islands at the far southwest end of Okinawa, a subtropical island of coral reefs, white-sand beaches, and turquoise water far closer to Taiwan than to mainland Japan. Getting ashore

Ships use the New Port District passenger pier, about 3km from the center, which is too far to walk comfortably, so take the complimentary shuttle (roughly 10 minutes) or a taxi to the downtown ferry terminal and Euglena Mall. One day is enough to pair Kabira Bay with downtown or the outer islands, since circling the whole island by car takes under three hours, so prioritize rather than rush.

Weather and when to visit

• December to April (cooler, drier calls). Typically mild and comfortable for walking, daytime around the low 20s C, the freshest and least rainy stretch of the year.
• May to June (plum rains). The Baiu rainy season brings heavy, humid spells and frequent rain, warming toward summer.
• July to October (hot, typhoon-prone). Hot and humid, highs near 29C, with the heaviest sun and the typhoon season running June through October, averaging a few storms a year that can disrupt a call entirely.
