Shimonoseki sits at the western tip of Honshu, on the narrow Kanmon Strait that separates it from Kyushu, and is Japan's self-styled fugu (pufferfish) capital. The port area is a compact waterfront of market, wharf, and shrine, with Kyushu close enough to reach on foot through an undersea tunnel. It rewards a day spent eating, browsing the fish market, and crossing the strait.

What to do on a day in Shimonoseki

• Karato Market, where on Fridays and Saturdays (10:00 to 15:00) and Sundays and holidays (8:00 to 15:00) the ground floor becomes the Iki-iki Bakangai stalls selling fresh hand-rolled sushi, fugu sashimi, and fugu soup
• Kamon Wharf, the seaside dining and shopping boardwalk next to the market with Kanmon Strait views
• Akama Shrine, with its vivid red gate, dedicated to the child-emperor Antoku who died in the 1185 Battle of Dan-no-ura
• The Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel, a free 780 m undersea walk to Kyushu (about 15 to 20 minutes), with a prefecture-border line midway 58 m below the surface
• Mojiko Retro across the strait, a preserved district of Meiji and Taisho era Western-style buildings, reachable by the short ferry or the tunnel walk

Getting ashore

Cruise ships use the Arcaport berth in the Higashiko area, beside the aquarium, market, and a Ferris wheel, with JR Shimonoseki Station about 10 minutes away. The market, wharf, and shrine are walkable, and one day comfortably covers the waterfront plus a strait crossing to Kyushu.

Weather and when to visit

• Spring (March to May). Mild and generally settled, comfortable for walking the waterfront and the undersea tunnel. Pleasant on the open boardwalk by the strait.
• Autumn (September to November). Warm early, cooling through the season, with clear stretches good for the Kanmon Bridge and strait views. Cooler near the water with the strait breeze.
