Toba is the birthplace of the cultured pearl and the gateway to Ise Jingu, the most sacred shrine in Shinto. The bay-front town puts the pearl story and an aquarium within a flat walk of the tender pier, while a short train ride inland reaches a shrine complex rebuilt every twenty years for over a millennium.

What to do on a day in Toba (Ise)

• Mikimoto Pearl Island, where the world's first cultured pearl was produced, with a pearl museum and hourly demonstrations by Ama women free-divers in white traditional dress, a 5 to 10 minute flat walk from the terminal
• Toba Aquarium, one of Japan's largest, home to dugongs and finless porpoises, about a 10 to 15 minute walk from the pier
• Ise Jingu Naiku (Inner Shrine), dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu, reached by train from Toba Station to Iseshi Station then bus, about 40 to 50 minutes each way
• Oharaimachi and Okage Yokocho, the old stone-paved approach streets to the Inner Shrine, lined with tea houses and food stalls
• Meoto Iwa, the Wedded Rocks joined by a sacred rope, at Futami between Toba and Ise

Getting ashore

Toba is a tender port; almost all large ships anchor in the bay and ferry passengers to the Toba Marine Terminal. From there it is a flat, well-signed 5 to 10 minute walk to Pearl Island, the aquarium, and Toba Station. One day forces a choice: stay local in Toba for pearls and the aquarium, or commit fully to Ise Jingu, which needs a minimum of 4 to 5 hours including the round-trip train. Trying to do both in a port day usually ends with a missed train.

Weather and when to visit

• Spring (April to May). Typically pleasant, April highs around 64F rising through the month, with moderate rainfall. Among the best windows for walking the shrine approaches and the bayfront.
• Autumn (October to November). Typically comfortable and clear, November highs in the upper 60s with cooler mornings and lower rainfall than the wet early-autumn months. A strong window for the inland shrine trip.
