Cádiz sits on a narrow Atlantic peninsula in Andalusia and is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Western Europe, a compact old town ringed by sea on three sides. The day is one of the easiest in the western Mediterranean: the ship ties up at the edge of the historic center, so a baroque cathedral, a working market, a Roman theatre, and an Atlantic beach are all reachable on foot without any transfer.

What to do on a day in Cadiz

  • Cádiz Cathedral, the baroque cathedral with a golden-tiled dome, with a bell-tower climb for rooftop views over the old town and sea
  • Torre Tavira, an 18th century watchtower whose camera obscura projects a live moving image of the city, plus a 360-degree rooftop panorama
  • The Roman Theatre, a 1st century BC amphitheatre near the cathedral, one of the largest known from the Roman world
  • Mercado Central de Abastos, the central market with fresh stalls and a tapas gallery for lunch
  • La Viña, the old fishermen's quarter, the local choice for fried fish and a long lunch
  • La Caleta beach and Parque Genovés, the city beach framed by two fortresses and the seafront botanical gardens, both a short walk

Getting ashore

Ships dock at Muelle Alfonso XIII (some at Reina Sofía), a few minutes' walk from the gates of the old town with no tendering. One day comfortably covers the cathedral, Torre Tavira, the Roman Theatre, the market, and lunch in La Viña on foot, with time left for the beach.

Weather and when to visit

  • March to June. Mild to warm spring, comfortable for walking, highs climbing from the high teens into the mid to high 20s C, generally dry and sunny
  • September to November. Warm early autumn easing toward mild, highs from the upper 20s C in September down through the low 20s, mostly sunny with the season's first Atlantic rain arriving later
