Málaga is the working capital of the Costa del Sol and the birthplace of Picasso, and its old town packs a Moorish hilltop fortress, a 1st-century BC Roman theater, and an unfinished Renaissance cathedral into a flat, pedestrian core a short walk from the pier. The port itself has been rebuilt into a waterfront promenade that delivers you almost into the center. One day handles the headline sights comfortably.

What to do on a day in Málaga

  • Alcazaba, the 11th-century Moorish hilltop fortress-palace of layered courtyards and gardens, with views over the city and port
  • Roman Theatre, a 1st-century BC theater built under Augustus, sitting at the foot of the Alcazaba and free to view from the street
  • Málaga Cathedral, the Renaissance-Baroque cathedral known as La Manquita ('the one-armed lady') because its south tower was left unfinished
  • Museo Picasso Málaga, the museum of the city's most famous son set in a 16th-century palace in the old town
  • Mercado de Atarazanas, the iron-and-glass market on a former Moorish shipyard, a working food market with stained glass and tapas stalls
  • Calle Larios and Muelle Uno, the pedestrian main axis of the old town and the rebuilt port promenade that connects the cruise terminal to the center

Getting ashore

Cruise ships dock at Terminal A or B (smaller vessels at the Palm Grove pier), and the Muelle Uno promenade leads from the terminal area to the old town in roughly a 20 to 30 minute flat walk; city bus 14 covers it in five stops if you would rather not walk. The historic center is compact and easily covered on foot in a day, with Gibralfaro castle the one climb that costs extra time.

Weather and when to visit

  • April to May (spring). Typically warm and mostly dry, highs around 20 to 22 C (68 to 72 F), with occasional short spring showers; ideal for the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro climbs.
  • June to August (summer). Typically hot, sunny, and dry, highs in the high 20s to low 30s C (low to high 80s F); bring a hat, water, and sun cover for the exposed fortress climbs.
  • September to October (autumn). Typically still warm with the sea at its second-warmest, drying crowds thinning; mid-September into October can bring occasional intense but brief showers.
