Lysekil is a compact fishing and resort town on the granite Bohuslän coast of western Sweden, near where the smooth pink Bohus granite reaches its southern limit. The draw is the combination right at the waterline: a working seafood town, a small saltwater aquarium fed by the fjord, and a nature reserve of 920-million-year-old rock you can walk to. The whole port experience is human-scale, which is the point.

What to do on a day in Lysekil

• Havets Hus aquarium, around 40 tanks of local fjord species including sharks and rays, a short walk from the pier
• Stångehuvud Nature Reserve, smooth pink granite and natural rock pools roughly a 15-minute walk from the center, donated for preservation by Calla Curman in 1925
• Lysekil Church, a granite building from 1901 with a 61-meter spire visible across the harbor
• The South Harbour waterfront for fresh shrimp, mussels, and oysters at the quayside restaurants
• Pinnevik beach and the coastal walking paths just outside the town center

Getting ashore

Ships berth right downtown at Anderssons Kaj in the South Harbour, on a pier that takes vessels up to about 255 meters, so you typically walk straight off rather than tender. The town center is roughly 1.3 km along the water, and one day is more than enough to cover the town, the aquarium, and the granite reserve at a relaxed pace.

Weather and when to visit

• June to August (the cruise window). Typical daytime highs around 18 to 21 C with long daylight, peaking near 15 hours in August. August is the wettest of the three with roughly a one-in-three chance of rain on a given day. Cool sea, swimming only realistic in July and August.
