Tallinn's medieval Old Town is one of the most complete in Europe, a walled core of cobbled lanes, merchant houses, and church spires that sits a short walk from the cruise berths. What to do on a day in Tallinn

• Town Hall Square (Raekoja plats), the medieval heart anchored by the 14th-century Gothic Town Hall, the only one of its kind surviving in Northern Europe
• Toompea hill and the Kohtuotsa and Patkuli viewing platforms, the classic overlook of spires and red rooftops in the upper town
• Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the 1900 Russian Orthodox cathedral with onion domes facing Toompea Castle

Getting ashore

Most ships berth in the Old City Harbour, and the entrance to the Old Town at Fat Margaret tower is about a 1 km, 15 to 20 minute walk; from there Town Hall Square is another 10 minutes. The center is small and cobbled, so one day comfortably covers the lower and upper town on foot with time for the harbor-side Kalamaja district.

• June (early Baltic season). Mild and very long days, highs around 19C / 66F, lows near 10C / 50F, with up to 18 hours of daylight and occasional showers.
• July and August (peak). The warmest stretch, highs around 21 to 22C / 70 to 72F, but also the wettest, with August averaging the most rain of the year, so pack a layer and light rain shell.
