Rønne is the main town and harbor of Bornholm, a Danish island far out in the Baltic between Sweden and Poland, known for its sunny microclimate, smokehouses, and medieval round churches. The town offers cobbled lanes of half-timbered, brightly painted houses, but the real reason to come ashore is the island beyond: the Hammershus ruins on the north coast and the fine-sand beach at Dueodde. Plan around a short tour or shuttle rather than the town alone.

What to do on a day in Rønne

  • Rønne's old quarter (Gamle Stan), cobbled streets of half-timbered houses painted in yellow and orange, best along Laksegade and Storegade and the wedge between Store Torv and Lille Torv
  • Store Torv and Lille Torv, the two market squares at the center of town and the focus of local shops
  • Hammershus, Scandinavia's largest medieval fortress ruin perched on a coastal rock on the north of the island, the standout sight (about an hour by road)
  • Dueodde, the southern-tip beach of famously fine pale sand backed by dunes and pine forest
  • Bornholm's round churches, the white fortress-like 12th and 13th century churches unique to the island, with Osterlars the largest
  • The smokehouse villages of Gudhjem and Svaneke on the east coast, where the island's smoked herring is the local specialty

Getting ashore

Ships dock close to central Rønne, about 1 to 1.5 km from town, with a free shuttle bus laid on and a flat 25 to 30 minute walk as the alternative. The town itself is a quick stroll, so one day works best paired with an island excursion or the seasonal sightseeing bus to reach Hammershus and the beaches.

Weather and when to visit

  • June (early season). Mild and unusually sunny for the Baltic, highs in the high teens C / mid to high 60s F, with near-white nights around the solstice when it barely gets fully dark.
  • July and August (peak). The warmest months, highs around 18 to 20C / 64 to 68F and sometimes higher, with Bornholm among the sunniest spots in Denmark; expect some rainy days and cool evenings.
