Stockholm is a capital built across fourteen islands where Lake Malaren meets the Baltic, and the approach through its archipelago is half the experience. The medieval old town of Gamla Stan, the royal palace, and the salvaged 17th-century warship Vasa are the anchors, most reachable on foot or by a short ferry hop. Where your ship ties up decides how much walking the day involves.

What to do on a day in Stockholm

  • Gamla Stan, the medieval old town on its own island, a warren of cobbled lanes around Stortorget square, the cathedral, and the Royal Palace
  • Vasa Museum on Djurgarden, holding the warship Vasa that sank on her 1628 maiden voyage and was raised intact in 1961, the only preserved 17th-century ship of its kind
  • Stockholm City Hall (Stadshuset), the brick landmark on the water where the Nobel Prize banquet is held, with garden and tower views over the old town
  • Royal Palace and its daily changing of the guard, at the edge of Gamla Stan facing the water
  • Djurgarden island ferry, a roughly 15-minute waterborne hop from Gamla Stan to the museum island, a scenic transfer in its own right

Getting ashore

Ships use Stadsgarden (on Sodermalm, walkable to Gamla Stan in about 20 to 30 flat minutes along the water) or Frihamnen (industrial and too far to walk, served by bus 76 or 1 into the center); the smallest vessels sometimes tie up at Skeppsbron right on the old town waterfront. From Stadsgarden one day on foot plus a short ferry to Djurgarden covers the essentials; from Frihamnen budget transit time into town.

Weather and when to visit

  • May to June (late spring to early summer). Typically mild and bright with highs climbing from around 16 to 21 C (60 to 70 F) and very long daylight near 18 hours in June; evenings cool sharply, so carry a layer.
  • July to August (high summer). Typically the warmest, highs around 20 to 23 C (68 to 73 F) with occasional rain (July is the wettest month) that rarely lasts; long daylight and lively waterfront.
  • September (early autumn). Typically cooler and quieter, highs around 15 C (60 F), comfortable for walking with crowds thinning.
