Klaipeda is Lithuania's only seaport and its most German-flavored city, an old Prussian town of half-timbered fachwerk houses, sculptures, and a castle marina at the mouth of the Curonian Lagoon. It earns the day two ways: a compact, quirky Old Town right at the pier, and a passenger ferry that drops you onto the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO landscape of shifting dunes and pine. The cruise berth sits roughly 100 meters from the city, so the center is on foot.

Getting ashore

Ships dock at the Old Town cruise terminal about 100 meters from the city, so the historic center is a few minutes on foot; some larger ships berth a little further south. With roughly seven hours ashore you choose one track, either the walkable Old Town and castle marina or the ferry to Smiltyne and the Spit, since combining both leaves no time to do either well.

Weather and when to visit

• June. Mild Baltic-coast weather, with highs around 18 to 19 degrees C and cooler air off the sea. Changeable, with a real chance of showers and breeze on the exposed Spit.
• July to August. The warmest months, with highs around 20 degrees C and lows in the mid teens. Comfortable for walking, with passing rain and sea breeze typical rather than steady heat.
• September. Cooling and breezier, with highs in the upper teens and shortening days. Pleasant for the Old Town, with a windbreaker worth having for the ferry and dunes.
