Visby is a walled Hanseatic trading town on the Swedish island of Gotland, and its draw is its near-intact ring of medieval defenses: a 3.4 km town wall studded with towers, wrapped around cobbled lanes, church ruins, and a single surviving cathedral. UNESCO lists it as one of the best-preserved fortified commercial towns in Northern Europe. The whole core fits inside the walls, a short walk from the cruise pier.

What to do on a day in Visby (Gotland)

  • The medieval town wall, the roughly 3.4 km fortified ring with its towers that defines Visby's skyline as you arrive
  • St Mary's Cathedral (Domkyrkan), the only surviving medieval church in the town, with a 12th-century font and historic pulpit
  • The church ruins scattered through the center, including St Karin (Sankta Karin) on Stora Torget and St Clemens, preserved as roofless shells
  • Stora Torget, the main square at the heart of the old town and the natural starting point for a walk
  • The Botanical Garden (Botaniska tradgarden), dating to 1855, about a 5-minute walk from the pier area, with exotic trees and themed beds
  • Almedalen, the green waterfront park between the harbor and the wall, an easy stroll on the way in or out

Getting ashore

Since 2018 Visby has had a dedicated cruise quay where most ships berth alongside, with overflow vessels anchoring and tendering; either way it is about a 1.2 km walk on a marked path to the old town. The center is compact but hilly with narrow cobbled lanes, and one day is more than enough to walk the walls, ruins, and cathedral.

Weather and when to visit

  • June (early season). Cool and bright with very long days, highs around 16 to 17C / 61 to 63F, lows near 12C / 53F, and a sea breeze that makes it feel fresher than the mainland.
  • July and August (peak). The mildest stretch, highs around 19 to 20C / 66 to 68F, plenty of sunshine, and the windiest exposure of the Baltic ports, so a windproof layer is worth carrying.
