Warnemünde is the seaside district of Rostock on Germany's Baltic coast, a former fishing village turned resort with one of the widest beaches on the Baltic. Most ships call here as the gateway to Berlin, but the village itself rewards a day on foot: a canal lined with fishermen's houses, a climbable lighthouse, and a long flat promenade. Decide early whether your day is the village or the capital, because they are different days.

What to do on a day in Warnemünde

• Alter Strom, the old canal through the village center, lined with colorful fishermen's houses, cafes, and traditional fishing boats
• Warnemünde Lighthouse from 1898, about 37 meters of white glazed brick, climbable for views over the town and the Baltic
• The Teepott, the 1960s shell-roofed building next to the lighthouse, now cafes and restaurants
• The beach, over 100 meters wide and several kilometers long, with its promenade about a 10-minute walk from the pier

Getting ashore

Ships dock at the dedicated cruise terminals right beside the village, and you walk off and into the center in under 1 km, heading right and through the pedestrian tunnel under the train station. One day easily covers the village; Rostock's old town and Berlin both require booked transport, with Berlin practical only via the charter trains or coaches the lines arrange.

Weather and when to visit

• May to September (the cruise window). Typical summer highs around 21 to 22 C with humid air and frequent passing showers; July is usually both the warmest and the wettest month. Sea temperature peaks near 17 to 18 C in August. Expect a mix of sun and rain on any given call and pack a layer.
