Getting ashore

Most ships anchor and tender passengers to Crescent Harbor right downtown at Harrigan Centennial Hall, while ships at the Sitka Sound terminal about five miles north run a frequent free shuttle to the same spot. Weather and when to visit

• May to June. The driest stretch of Sitka's year, though that is relative on a coast that averages around 83 inches a year. Highs typically run upper 50s to low 60s Fahrenheit, frequently cloudy, with 15 to 16 hours of daylight. Pack a waterproof layer regardless.
• July to September. Daily highs typically in the mid to upper 50s, getting progressively wetter as summer goes on and stronger Gulf of Alaska frontal systems return. Expect cloud, drizzle, and the chance of steady rain on any given day.
