Vancouver is the embarkation city for most Alaska sailings, a coastal Canadian metropolis pinned between the harbor and the Coast Mountains, with a forested 1,000-acre park at its tip. The ship berths at Canada Place right downtown, which makes it one of the most walkable cruise ports anywhere, from a historic quarter to a seawall in either direction.

What to do on a day in Vancouver

  • Gastown, the cobblestoned original townsite with its steam clock and Indigenous art galleries, about a ten-minute walk from Canada Place
  • Stanley Park and its Seawall, the waterfront path lined with totem poles and ocean views, roughly twenty minutes on foot
  • The Coal Harbour seawall, a flat waterfront walk linking Canada Place to the park edge
  • Robson Street and the CF Pacific Centre for shopping, about a ten to fifteen minute walk inland
  • The SeaBus from Waterfront Station, a five-minute walk away, crossing the harbor to Lonsdale Quay market in about twelve minutes
  • FlyOver Canada, the flight-simulator attraction inside the Canada Place complex

Getting ashore

Ships berth at the Canada Place terminal in the heart of downtown, with Gastown, Stanley Park, and Robson Street all reachable on foot. As an embarkation port a full day works well; if you are turning around the same day, the downtown core and one of the two seawalls is realistic, while Capilano or Granville Island would need transit.

Weather and when to visit

  • May to early June. Typically cool and changeable as the rainy season tapers, daytime highs around 16 to 19C with a real chance of showers. Pack a layer and a shell.
  • July to August. Typically the warmest and driest stretch, highs around 22 to 24C, long daylight, and the fewest rain days of the cruise season.
  • September. Typically mild and still pleasant early in the month, highs in the high teens to low 20s C, with rainfall beginning to build again toward the end of the Alaska season.
