Wrangell is a working Southeast Alaska town of about 2,500 people, with no chain jewelry rows or built-for-tourists waterfront. The ship lands at the north end of a real downtown, and the headline sights are ancient rock art and a Tlingit clan house rather than excursion midways. This is the call for travelers who want the genuine, lived-in Alaska between the big-ship ports.

What to do on a day in Wrangell

  • Petroglyph Beach State Historic Site, about a 20 to 25 minute walk from the dock, where three dozen rock carvings thousands of years old appear at the tideline; you must time it to low tide to see them
  • Chief Shakes Tribal House on Shakes Island, a Tlingit clan house rebuilt in 2013 with traditional methods, ringed by carved totem poles and reached by a short footbridge roughly 15 to 25 minutes from the ship
  • The Wrangell Museum in downtown, a compact stop for the town's Tlingit and frontier history within easy walking distance of the pier
  • Mount Dewey Trail, a short forested climb from downtown to an overlook of the harbor and the channel
  • A Stikine River jet-boat tour, the local signature, running several hours up one of the fastest free-flowing rivers in North America past cliffs, glaciers, and eagles
  • Anan Wildlife Observatory, a boat-and-boardwalk bear-viewing site about 30 miles out, best mid-July through August during the salmon run and requiring advance permits

Getting ashore

The ship uses a T-shaped dock at the northern end of downtown Wrangell, so the museum, Petroglyph Beach, and Shakes Island are all roughly a 15 to 25 minute walk. One day is enough for the in-town sights on foot, but the Stikine River and Anan tours each consume most of the day, so choose town or wilderness.

Weather and when to visit

  • May to June (early season). Typically cool and often wet, daytime around 15 to 18C/59 to 64F with long daylight; pack a waterproof layer and shoes that handle slick rock.
  • July to September (peak and late season). Typically the warmest and the wettest stretch, highs in the high 50s to low 60s F with frequent rain; mid-July into August is also the strongest bear window at Anan.
