Bequia is the largest of the Grenadines, a seven-square-mile island in St Vincent and the Grenadines with a deep sailing and whaleboat-building heritage and a single small harbor town, Port Elizabeth, on Admiralty Bay. It rewards a slow day: a flat coastal walkway links the town to good swimming beaches, and the island's identity runs through model-boat workshops and a one-man turtle sanctuary. One day is plenty, and most of it can be done on foot.

What to do on a day in Bequia

• Belmont Walkway, the paved shoreline path from the Port Elizabeth jetty along Admiralty Bay past restaurants and yacht moorings, the spine of any walking day
• Princess Margaret Beach, a palm-backed swimming and snorkeling beach reachable on foot via the walkway in about 30 minutes or a quick taxi
• Sargeant Brothers Model Boat Shop in Port Elizabeth, where local makers hand-build wooden replica yachts, one of which was presented to Queen Elizabeth II in 1985
• Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary on the northeast coast, the small hawksbill-rehabilitation project started by Orton King in 1995, a short taxi ride from town
• Lower Bay, a broad calm beach beyond Princess Margaret for swimming and a beach lunch, reached by taxi or a longer walk
• Frangipani and Mac's, the waterfront hangouts in town, Mac's known for its lobster pizza and Frangipani for its bayfront setting

Weather and when to visit

• Dry high season (December to April). Typically the driest and sunniest window with daytime highs around 28 to 29 Celsius, steady trade winds, and short evening squalls. February is usually the driest month. This is when most cruise calls land.
• Shoulder (May to June). Typically warm with rising humidity and more frequent showers as the dry season ends. Highs sit near 29 to 30 Celsius.
