St. George's is Grenada's capital, a horseshoe harbor town of pastel and red-tile buildings stacked up a steep hillside, with a Georgian fort above and the spice market at its heart. Grenada grows and exports nutmeg, mace, and cinnamon, so the island's working spice trade is right there in town, not a staged show. One unhurried day covers the town on foot, with a beach or the underwater sculpture park if you want to leave the center.

• The Carenage, the inner-harbor promenade lined with fishing boats and 18th-century warehouses, a 10-minute walk from the Melville Street terminal
• Fort George, a short uphill climb from Young Street for views down over the harbor, the town's rooftops, and Grande Anse Beach
• Market Square and the spice market, busiest on Saturday, where island-grown nutmeg, mace, and cinnamon are sold alongside produce
• Grenada National Museum, housed in an 18th-century building covering island history, a few minutes' walk from the waterfront
• Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park, Jason deCaires Taylor's submerged concrete figures, reached by a roughly 10-minute boat ride from the Carenage by snorkel, dive, or glass-bottom boat
• Grande Anse Beach, two miles of sand reached by water taxi or road taxi from the Carenage

Getting ashore

Large ships dock at the Melville Street Cruise Terminal and you walk through the Esplanade mall straight into downtown; on busy days smaller vessels tender to the Carenage. The town itself is compact and walkable, and one day is plenty to cover the center plus either a beach or the sculpture park.

Weather and when to visit

• December to April (the months cruise ships call). This is the dry season. Days are typically warm and steady, around 29 to 31C, with the least rain of the year and lowest humidity from February through April, when monthly rainfall often runs near an inch or less.
