St. John's is the colorful harbor capital of Antigua, where the cruise piers land you in a walkable downtown of duty-free quays, a Georgian-era waterfront, and a twin-towered cathedral. The town itself is a short, pleasant browse; the island's real prizes are the beaches and the restored Nelson's Dockyard, both a short drive out. It earns the day by giving you a genuine Caribbean town on foot plus an easy reach to white-sand bays.

What to do on a day in St. John's (Antigua)

  • Redcliffe Quay, the restored Georgian waterfront of shops, cafes, and bars connected to the piers by boardwalk
  • St. John's Cathedral, the Baroque-towered Anglican cathedral on the rise above downtown
  • The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, in the 1750 former courthouse on Market and Long Streets
  • Heritage Quay's duty-free shopping and the adjacent public market at the end of Market Street
  • Dickenson Bay, the long white-sand beach with bars and watersports about 15 minutes by taxi
  • Nelson's Dockyard at English Harbour, the UNESCO-listed restored 18th-century Royal Navy base about 40 minutes away

Getting ashore

Most ships berth at Heritage Quay or the Nevis Street Pier, a five-minute walk into downtown; the largest ships use Deep Water Harbour about a mile from the center. Downtown is a quick visit, so plan a beach or Nelson's Dockyard to fill the day.
