What to do on a day in Road Town (Tortola)

• Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park, the open-air complex of shops and restaurants right where you walk off the ship, with seating and landscaping if you want a low-effort day
• Main Street and the waterfront in downtown Road Town, a 10 to 15 minute walk from the pier, where Pusser's and small shops line the route
• Crafts Alive Village, a cluster of local artisan stalls near the waterfront selling BVI-made baskets, jewelry, and souvenirs
• Cane Garden Bay, the island's best-known beach with bars and water, about 20 to 25 minutes by taxi over the ridge
• Sage Mountain National Park, the highest point in the BVI with rainforest trails, roughly 20 minutes by taxi
• The Baths on Virgin Gorda, the granite boulder grottoes that are the region's signature sight, reached by a 30-minute ferry from the Road Town terminal a short walk from the pier

Getting ashore

Ships berth at the Tortola Cruise Pier, and you step straight into the Pier Park; downtown is a flat 10 to 15 minute walk along Administration Drive to Main Street. One day is plenty for the town and a single excursion, but if you want The Baths on Virgin Gorda, build in roughly two hours round trip plus ferry buffer and treat that as the whole day.

Weather and when to visit

• December to April (dry season, when most cruises call). Typically warm and sunny with daytime highs around 26 to 28C / 79 to 83F and cooler, breezier days around the holidays from the Christmas winds. This is the least rainy, least humid stretch of the year.
• May to November. Hotter and more humid, highs near 29 to 30C / 85F, with the Atlantic hurricane season running June to November and peak storm risk August to mid-October.
