Gibraltar is a 2.6 square mile British territory built around a single limestone monolith at the mouth of the Mediterranean, where you hear English, pay in pounds, and look across the strait toward Morocco. The Rock holds the only wild monkey population in Europe along with a warren of military tunnels, sea caves, and a nature reserve, all packed onto one ridge above a pedestrian town. One day is enough to see the headline sights because everything sits within a few square miles.
What to do on a day in Gibraltar
- Upper Rock Nature Reserve, reached by shared taxi tour since the cable car is closed for a full rebuild until 2027, covering the main summit attractions in one loop
- Barbary macaques at the Apes' Den, the only wild monkeys in Europe, where touching and feeding are prohibited by law
- St Michael's Cave, a large illuminated limestone cavern inside the Upper Rock used as a concert and event space
- The Skywalk, a glass viewing platform out over the southern Rock with sightlines to Spain, Africa, and the strait
- Great Siege Tunnels and the WWII tunnels, galleries cut into the Rock for defense, plus the Moorish Castle below them
- Main Street, the pedestrianized duty-free shopping spine of the town, a flat 10 to 15 minute walk from the cruise berth
Weather and when to visit
- Spring (March to May). Typically mild and warming, with daytime highs climbing from the mid teens to low 20s Celsius. March can bring the Levanter, the easterly wind that drapes a cloud cap over the Rock and raises humidity.
- Summer (June to August). Typically warm and dry with highs commonly in the high 20s to low 30s Celsius and very little rain. This is peak Levanter season from July, so the summit can sit under cloud while the town stays clear.
- Autumn (September to November). September is typically warm with the sea at its warmest and thinner crowds. Rainfall builds through the season, from light in September to much wetter by November as highs ease from the mid 20s toward the high teens Celsius.
