Spain's third city pairs a dense medieval core, where the Holy Grail sits inside a Gothic cathedral, with Calatrava's white modernist science city built into a drained riverbed. The two halves sit a few kilometers apart, linked by a long ribbon of garden, so the day is really a choice between old stone and new sculpture, or a brisk attempt at both.
What to do on a day in Valencia
- Mercado Central, one of Europe's largest covered food markets, under a Modernista glass-and-iron roof in the old town
- La Lonja de la Seda (Silk Exchange), a UNESCO-listed 15th-century Gothic trade hall with spiral columns
- Valencia Cathedral and Plaza de la Reina, where the chapel holds a cup venerated as the Holy Grail
- Barrio del Carmen, the tangle of streets with Roman and Arab-era layers beneath the surface
- City of Arts and Sciences: the Hemisferic, the Oceanografic aquarium, and the Calatrava architecture along the old riverbed
- Turia Gardens, the green corridor in the former river channel that connects the old town to the science city on foot or by bike
Getting ashore
Ships dock at the commercial Marina de Valencia, roughly 4 km from the historic center through working port and urban streets, so walking the whole way is not the move. A port shuttle, bus 4 to Plaza de l'Ajuntament, or a short taxi gets you in. One day comfortably covers either the old town or the science city; doing both means committing to the Turia garden walk between them and watching the clock.
