Gothenburg is Sweden's easygoing second city, built on canals and shipbuilding wealth, with a walkable core of cobbled lanes, a leafy boulevard, and a fish market shaped like a church. It rewards a slow day on foot rather than a checklist. The draw is atmosphere and cafes over headline monuments.

What to do on a day in Gothenburg

  • Haga, the oldest district, a few cobbled blocks of low wooden and stone houses, independent shops, and cafes known for oversized cinnamon buns
  • Feskekorka, the 1874 fish hall whose name means the fish church, for the architecture and a counter lunch of seafood
  • Slottsskogen, the large central park with free-roaming animal enclosures and easy walking paths, a tram ride from the center
  • Gothenburg Museum of Art on Gotaplatsen at the head of the Avenyn, strong on Nordic painting, with the broad cafe-lined boulevard leading up to it
  • Liseberg, Scandinavia's largest amusement park with classic wooden coaster and gardens, a short tram ride from the center for those traveling with family
  • A Paddan canal and moat boat tour that threads the old fortification waterways and out toward the harbor

Getting ashore

Smaller luxury ships use the America Cruise Terminal at Stigbergskajen, about 2 km from the center and a flat 15 to 20 minute walk or a couple of stops on tram lines 3 or 9; larger ships dock at Arendal farther out and run a shuttle to Gustav Adolf's Square. One day is comfortably enough to walk Haga, the fish church, and the Avenyn at an unhurried pace.

Weather and when to visit

  • Late May to June. Mild and green, daytime highs around 60 to 68 F, very long daylight near midsummer when the sun barely sets, with a mix of sun and passing showers.
  • July to August (peak summer). Warmest, highs around 70 to 73 F, nights in the mid 50s, the most reliable terrace and canal-boat weather though rain is always possible.
  • September. Cooling and noticeably shorter days, highs in the low 60s F, more grey and damp but still pleasant for walking.
