Getting ashore

Ships now berth alongside at the dedicated Ha Long International Cruise Port (Sun Port) in Bai Chay, which can take the largest vessels with no tendering; the Bai Chay center is a 10 to 15 minute walk. Hanoi sits roughly 160 km away, about 3 hours each way by road, so it is not a realistic day-call objective; the bay itself is. One day is enough for a half-day boat tour and a cave, which is the right use of the time.

• Oct-Nov. The prime cruise window: cool, dry, mostly sunny autumn air with good visibility over the karsts, daytime around 28 C in October easing cooler through November.
• Dec-Mar. Cool and dry, daytime in the high teens to mid 20s C, the busiest stretch around the holidays; haze and occasional cool drizzle can soften the views.
