Nha Trang is Vietnam's main beach resort city on the south-central coast, a long crescent of sand backed by a busy seafront boulevard and ringed by islands. The day balances easily between the beach and a real cultural core: the Cham temple towers above the river and a hilltop white Buddha are both a short drive from the dock.

What to do on a day in Nha Trang

• Po Nagar Cham Towers, a 7th-to-12th century Hindu-Cham temple complex on a bluff over the Cai River, about fifteen minutes from the port
• Long Son Pagoda, where 152 steps climb to a large seated white Buddha overlooking the city
• Nha Trang Cathedral, a gray Gothic-style stone church built into the rock near the train station
• Tran Phu Beach, the central crescent of golden sand a short ride away, lined with cafes
• Dam Market, the city's largest traditional market for seafood, produce, and local goods
• Thap Ba hot springs and mud baths, mineral soaks on the city's northern edge, a relaxed alternative to the beach

Getting ashore

Ships use Cau Da port on the southern edge of the bay; smaller vessels dock alongside while larger ships anchor and tender, which adds time each way. The center and beach sit about 3 to 5 km away, a seven to twelve minute taxi, so you need wheels to reach anything, but one day is plenty to pair a temple or two with beach time.

Weather and when to visit

• January to April (dry, main cruise window). Typically warm, sunny, and dry with calm seas and low humidity, the most reliable stretch for tendering; February and March see the least rain.
• May to August. Typically hot and largely dry with gentle sun and calm water, still good for shore time.
• October to November. Typically the wettest months with heavy rain and rougher seas, and a typhoon risk that can disrupt tenders.
